ESR seeks tax volunteers

ESR’s Forsyth Free Tax program helps working families with low-to-moderate income get their maximum tax refund, save their refund dollars, and spend them wisely. Forsyth Free Tax tax sites are open during tax season. The program is free to anyone who meets the income guidelines. Taxes are prepared by IRS-certified volunteers.

ESR is seeking volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers are provided training and guidance. Training includes tax law, ethics, intake and reviewing, and tax preparation using the IRS tax software. Volunteer opportunities are offered virtually and in person.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Tax Preparers receive extensive online training. Tax preparers must pass IRS certification exams. Volunteers must have access to the internet and an email address. We ask that tax preparers plan to work at least two four-hour shifts per week during tax season.
  • Greeters/Receptionists greet clients, organize and scan documents, and assist clients before and after they meet with preparers. One three-hour training session is required. After that, most volunteers work one 3-4 hour shift per week during tax season.
  • Appointment Schedulers schedule appointments and provide general information to clients over the phone. One two-hour training session is required. Volunteers work at least one 3-4-hour shift.
