RJ Reynolds Day of Caring

ESR hosts Day of Caring with Reynolds Volunteers

Winston-Salem, NC – Experiment in Self-Reliance (ESR)  hosted a Day of Caring on September 15 as a part of their 53rd birthday service initiative. In partnership RAI Services and RJ Reynolds, the grounds of ESR and shelters for the working homeless were revitalized in an effort to alleviate the financial burden of the organization associated with the upkeep.

RAI Services and RJ Reynolds first contacted ESR about wanting to give back to the organization after learning about its services through ESR’s former board chair, Jerry Romans, and other longtime supporters of ESR who are associated with Reynolds. After telling the group about their need, Reynolds was willing to help, and sponsored all materials to complete the projects.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to plant a flower garden on the grounds of ESR, revitalize the shelters, and cook a meal for clients. Clients, who saw the work firsthand, were grateful for the kindness demonstrated from the volunteers.

Luna Williams, ESR’s Orientation and Eligibility Specialist and coordinator of ESR’s Days of Caring, is thankful for the role the company plays in helping our residents. “Reynolds American Inc. plays a vital role in ESR’s existence in the community. Here at ESR the staff is grateful for Reynolds American Inc., its employee’s labor of love and acts of generosity,” said Williams. “Oh how Reynolds American has been steadfast in supporting the mission of ESR, and for that, we are grateful.”

This Day of Caring event was a part of ESR’s Day of Service celebration that took place on September 27 in honor of ESR’s 53rd Birthday. Volunteers for the Day of Service were placed at one of 9 non-profits and organizations across Forsyth County as a way of giving back to the community.

RAI Services and RJ Reynolds also donated a bench which was dedicated, along with the flower garden, to three longtime staff members in a ceremony on October 11.

ESR would like to give a special thanks to RAI Services and RJ Reynolds for their generosity.
