The Forsyth Free Tax program provides free tax preparation for low to moderate income families, many of whom qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This program ensures that taxpayers who qualify for the credit receive it, but isn’t limited to only those households. The Forsyth Free Tax program began as an initiative of the Forsyth Working Families Partnership, and has continued to provide its participants with quality service, as well as return millions of dollars to the community. Numerous businesses, educational, non profit and government partners participate in assisting over 4,000 individuals and families each year. Tax preparation sites are available throughout Winston-Salem and Forsyth County during tax season.
The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site tax preparation volunteers are trained by IRS staff members and use IRS-approved software for return preparation. Trained volunteers prepare and electronically file your tax return at a variety of local VITA sites, so there is probably a site near you. If you are due a refund, you can usually expect to receive it within ten days of filing. VITA sites file most simple returns, however please check to make sure you qualify.
VITA site volunteers prepare 1040EZ, 1040A, and many other 1040 returns, including common schedules and tax credits such as education credits, additional child tax credits, credits for childcare, unemployment benefits, and of course the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Volunteers CANNOT prepare returns that include any of the following due to liability issues:
If you have any question about whether your tax return can be filed at a VITA site, please contact ESR.

If you need to file an amended return or have other questions about your tax return, our Forsyth Free Tax staff also work with tax clients after the tax season has ended. This service is usually available from May through September, by appointment only. Contact our Forsyth Free Tax Team – (336) 722-9400 x164 for an appointment.
During the tax season we just couldn’t do it without our volunteers. We recruit volunteers each year in the fall for the following tax season. The tax season runs from January or February until about April 15 each year, but we bring on volunteers well before the season begins to make sure they are well trained and confident by the time the season begins.
There are a number of roles for those who would like to help. We need people who will prepare taxes at the various VITA sites. Tax site greeters are critical for customer service; they sign participants in and make sure they have the right documents. Technical Assistants help participants who want to file their own taxes at the sites. A Quality Assurance volunteer examines every return. If you don’t have experience or tax knowledge, don’t worry! We train our volunteers and prepare them for working at a VITA site. So, if you think you’d like a fast paced volunteer position, please click here, and choose Tax Preparer (even if you want to be a greeter or QA. This just connects you with the program).
